Jac could admit she and Jonno were no longer just having sex. Sheâd allowed it to move past that, and into an entirely different category. Where that category actually lay was a tricky conundrum, though. Were Jonno and herself making out, making love, or merely making a progressively entangled series of mistakes?
On Friday morning, she woke up in the futon-bed Jonno had been using in the den. Rather than her usual upside-down-under-the-covers position, she was snuggled under the builderâs hairy armpit. That sheâd accidentally slept over was not what disturbed her most, nor was it the musky body-part itself. Most disconcerting was the fact her unconscious mind seemed content to undertake a deep, dreamless sleep cocooned naked next to the man as if she couldnât be more safe.
Not at all her norm, this blind acknowledgement of trust.
Why this particular human? Her holiday fling was turning into more of a make-yourself-at-home thing, which wasnât going to work. Jonno lived in Dunedin, and she lived in Wellingtonâamong a multitude of other concerns which admittedly faded a little from the forefront of her mind when snuggled in close to his warmth.
âWhat happened to the motorbike thief?â
In close range to his ribcage, Jonnoâs voice boomed and Jac nearly jumped out of her skin.
âSon of aâ¦â She caught herself before the curse escaped. âI thought you were still asleep!â
âI probably wouldâve been if you hadnât just licked my armpit.â Jonno stretched his arms above his head in a lazy movement, evidently still waking up.
âI did not lick your armpit!â Jac refuted vehemently.
She didnât think she had. Surely not? Unless he meant the taut ridge of sinew that ran alongside it? Then, yes. Perhaps she had.
âNo? Thatâs what it felt like. Maybe youâve just got a really cold nose.â Jonno chuckled, and Jac got the distinct impression he was laughing at her, not with her. âSo what happened to him?â
âWho?â
âThe motorbike thief.â Jonno brought his arm back down, nudging at the back of her head until she complied, lifting her neck to let him slide under.
âHe got nicked, and went to juvie.â
âAhâ¦â Jonno pulled her in a little closer, his thigh lining up against hers. âWas he special to you?â
She was reminded in a very tactile way that not only was she naked, but Jonno was in the same state.
âSpecial enough for me to steal his name.â
Jonno made a little grunt of surprise. âOh, I didnât realise⦠OâNeil? You were married?â
âNo.â She laughed. âThatâs the one Iâve had since birth. I took on the name Jac, so we could be Jac and Jack. Jack Delaney was his name. We were pretty much inseparable.â Before all the bad shit had gone down all at once. Delaney arrested, Deb getting a scholarship for Uni, and Chrissy losing her rag over her latest toe-rag boyfriend.
âWhere is he now?â
Despite the warmth of the body next to her, a chill crept in. âI donât know. We lost touch.â It came out sounding nonchalant, maybe flippant, and she became aware of Jonnoâs sudden stillness.
